When Life Throws You a Curve Ball
September 23, 2020In his book, Master Your Money, Ron Blue tells an amazing story of an 80 year old retired pastor who came to him for advice. It seems this pastor had never earned more than $8000 in one year. He wanted to know if he had enough money to last the rest of his life. He had been retired for twenty years, and his wife had just begun to require full-time nursing care.
Ron began asking the pastor a few questions. When asked if he had any debt his response was no, and he went on to say that he had never borrowed any money. Ron asked, “Why not?” He said because if he borrowed money, he would have to pay it back someday, and he couldn’t afford to pay off debt, feed his family, and tithe.
Ron’s second question was to ask what resources he presently had. He indicated that in his wife’s name, they had approximately $250,000 in cash, money market funds, and certificates of deposit. Additionally, in his name, they had another $350,000 in cash and cash-type investments. Over $600,000 cash accumulated by a couple who had never earned more than $8000 per year!
Ron noticed that the pastor had not mentioned any stock investments, and yet in looking at his tax returns he noticed a substantial amount of dividend income. He revealed that at retirement he had invested $10,000 in the stock of a new company, and at the present time, the market value of his stock in that company was $1,063,000. Wow!
This remarkable (and true) story could easily be construed as a tribute to a faithful pastor and his wife and their discipline with money. I, however, choose to interpret it as an example of the beautiful faithfulness and blessings of God to those whose hearts belong to Him! The pastor simply followed the clear teachings of Scripture regarding money and possessions. He wasn’t seeking to become rich. He was being faithful to his Lord. (“seek first the Kingdom… and all these things will be added.” Matthew 6:33)
